Dear DeviantArt:

Journal Entry: Tue Jul 19, 2011, 11:38 PM

PLEASE give us the option to disable the "more from _______" window on the side of deviations. I do not need nor want people looking at stuff I did back in 2006 while they are viewing work I did three weeks ago.

This issue is serious, at least for me. Serious enough for me to consider taking my gallery down as this issue has been voiced many times and thus far has not been addressed at all.

(Or it has, and I haven't been made aware of it. In which case I'd look like even more of a bumbling idiot.)

Thanks for your time.
-DC

P.S.: GO NATINALS!!!1

Seconded (or perhaps eighty-fifthed). I've never seen it showcase anything recent or related to the one I'm looking at...

and it makes me want to obviate my older work too. :\

And then I looked at my own and did just that. :\

I love the 'more from...' box - I get lost for ages in peoples galleries with it (particularly if they have big galleries that need a bit of effot to get through otherwise)

If you're not happy for people to see something the simplest solution is to delete it.

It's a matter of context. I don't want certain art to be shown next to other art because it does not reflect my current skill set, as I explained in the example.

But that's kinda my point - if you don't want people viewing the stuff from 3yrs ago you just have to get rid of it.
The general assumption of deviantart is (quite reasonably) that if you display something in your gallery you're happy for people to see it - the context is that it's a piece of work you rate highly enough for the public to see so the particular order isn't particularly important. You might even find a few people quite like your older work too.

And sometimes (speaking as a fan of the little random box) you'll find something earlier in an artists development that is a really fascinating insight into how they've changed.

I have it up because there are folks out there who still want to see it. There's a reason dA put in the folders and partitions - and having this feature kind of undoes that reasoning.

Well, not really.
Having folders and partitions in your gallery makes it easier for your fans to navigate it and to find the kind of stuff they are looking for.
Those charming little boxes present a random sample of your work to tempt them into looking at your gallery - a show of variety. A sample of poentially everything your gallery has to offer.
There are indeed folks who love your older stuff but there are also folks who wouldn't have gone looking in the darkened recesses of your gallery to find it - so there it is. For them to find.

And to turn off potential employers who hotlink to a particular deviation and see thumbs of crap I did in '06 before looking at the rest of my work.

But for potential employers wouldn't you be better off using a DA portfolio?

And in fairness do you really think a potential employer wouldn't thorourly examine your gallery anyway? It's like I said - if you don't want people to look at it then just take it down.
