So I found out today that DA has removed the option for artists to choose the resolution at which their work can be viewed. DA automatically resizes the pics based on... um... I have no idea. `
Rahll has already explained in his most recent Journal why this is a bad idea, and apparently more than a few high-profile artists are leaving because of this decision.
I don't know what went into it, whose call it was, or whether this is going to be something that will be re-offered for "premium" members exclusively. All I can say is that it was a bad decision. A really, really bad decision.
I personally can't see myself submitting my work to a place that auto-resizes my work. I have my resolution set very high so that viewers can see the texture of the media I use to create my artwork; it's a very important part of the overall effect I'm going for, and if jpeg compression smooths it out, it's like going over my pictures with a giant Blur tool.
Please, DA, don't do things like this. I might have to go back to the bitter, cynical, ranting version of `
GH-MoNGo who the higher-ups don't like very much.
Stay classy, folks.

Aside from $Moonbeam13 and $chix0r, who else do you think deserves to get feedback on this? (And by deserves I mean "people who actually have a legitimate connection with this feature and by pestering them we're not barking up the wrong tree.")

X = the number of people who leave DA
R = the maximum resolutions available
C = the amount of choice we retain
oLog{(R/2)*C}
In the end this is obviously a bandwidth gamble. It has nothing to do with art protection or ease of viewing, but if Y number of user's work is shrunken, the difference is saved directly in bandwidth costs squared, which increases profit ratios compared to advertisments.
And you may be right that it may be the administrations idea to 're-offer' original settings to premium subscribers.
If you really wanted to shock the owners back into reality, I'd suggest a solid week where no one goes on DA and watch their traffic drop significantly, just to remind them how much money they'd LOSE by pulling stunts like this...
But then again, if enough people sit by and take this crap, it'll just happen. It's gonna keep happening anyways, but at least the more features we save the more likely new members are to join this site... Rather than a bunch of paying customers having their ego's stroked by poor art fans and pages rampaged with abusive nonsense. We've got enough of those things already.
Perhaps there just needs to be a non-profit version of DeviantArt, and less stupid and easier to use than SheezyArt.
There's storm-artists.net...
The heart emoticon and sad-ass apology is insulting, but at least they did something we wanted.
