No really, is this site MySpace or what?

Journal Entry: Wed Jun 30, 2010, 9:37 PM

"Buy accessories for your Llama Badge"

"Buy a cake badge"

I have always been a proponent of the features and benefits that come with a subscription Premium Membership (except for Critiques, but that's a whole other can of worms), but paying for badges seems a bit trite to me. Just going by first impressions. I understand dA needs to make money, but this just feels like they're pushing the MySpace side of dA a little too far.

In other news, why do art books have to be so expensive? Peter de Seve's new art book is $50, while The Art of How to Train Your Dragon retails for $40. That's $90... enough to by food for three weeks!

Stay classy, folks.

The whole "Social Network Nickel and Dime" thing is a bit on the ugh site. Points, badges - I just like my premium account dammit.

Art books are a niche market - less potential customers mean higher costs so higher prices. The tragedy of economics.

Try not to get too mad at DA for the whole badges thing - it's an added extra that some people may enjoy but really it has very little impact at the moment on everyday users. It's not like they force people to use them.

They're ugly.

Yeah but so is Mick Hucknall and he never did any harm. There are worse things in the world than ugly.

Second-hand book stores, book sales (e.g. charity book sale fund raisers or garage sale), and e-bay (careful that the shipping isn't too expensive) will be your friends. It may take longer to acquire specific books that way, but in the mean time you are likely to find the most amazing books for $2 or less (except on e-bay perhaps) that you would have never stumbled across other wise.

Ah yes, I'm very familiar with those second-hand stores. They can be a gold mine.

Cuz they be popular? I dunno really. If some are art books of mangas, and the mangas are cheaper than the art books, you can just get the manga and use them for art books.

I just got a notice that asked me if I wanted to make my birth date public for some dumbtarded "friends" thing. I don't really mind all this crap because mostly it's stuff that I can ignore (I hope people don't think I'm an asshole for not giving them "llama badges" back, though), but like `misskittyoooo said, it'd be nice if dA at least tried to pretend like it's an art site once in a while.
